PDP Reps Defect Amids Lingering Disagreements
It appears the People's Democratic Party (PDP) are going through a rough patch if the recent defection amongst its House of Representatives members are anything to go by,8 PDP members amongst the lawmakers have just defected from the party citing reasons which range from disagreements about the recently held primaries in their various states,to internal party divisions. However in a sort of padded repreive, all of the defectors did not move enmasse to their closest rival the All Progressive Congress APC,as only 4 moved to the APC,2 moved to the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA,while the People's Democratic Movement PDM and Social Democratic Party SDP both gained 1 each.
According to an official speaking on the developement "As it stands today, the APC has taken over as the majority party. There are now 179 APC members, while PDP has 162.The small parties together have 19members.
When Punch newspapers sought the response of the Deputy House Leader, while he neither confirmed nor denied the developement,he tersely reminded them that the issue of defecion was yet to be determined by the courts.
In other news the house has further amended the electoral Act of 2010 to reflect present situation by making provision to empower the independent National Electoral Commission |(INEC) in ensuring that internally displaced people are able to vote next month. The amendement was in responce to INEC'S stance that they had no legal backing to guarantee voting for IDPs.The amendement is a new clause to the existing section 26 of the principal act giving INEC powers to make voting provisions for IDP.
