The United Nations Refugee Agency are reporting that about 7,300 refugees, fleeing from the Boko Haram onslaught in Baga and surrounding villages and towns in the North East of Nigeria have arrived Western Chad.According to a speokesperson from UNHCR the refugees were presently putting up withseveral local families in and around the North west of Chadian Capital N'Djamena.Chadian Authorities have also approached the UNHCR the last couple of days,to help with the rescue and relocation of another 1,000 refugees who are presently stranded on the island of Kangala in Lake Chad.
Presently now Chad is said to be hosting a total of about 10,000 Nigerian Refugees.According to them the Refugees in spite of their conditions are optimistic and hope to return to their abode when the state of insecurity dies down.
It will be recalled that in a census conducted by the UNHCR technical support, they found out that about 90,000 who consist of Nigerians and Nigeriens but predominantly Nigerians have so far relocated to the Niger's diffa region since 2013 as a result of the insurgency. They assert that in all,the continued conflict have led to the mass exodus of about 135,000 with about 35,000 of them presently sequestred in Cameroon as refugees and another 10,000 in Chad. The have suggested that a cursory figure of about 850,000 Nigerians are presently displaced within the Yobe | Borno and Adamawa Axis.
While these are highly troubling times, and we acknowledge all that our brave and gallant armed forces are doing,we are calling stridently on the Government to be more proactive in responding to the Refugee crisis of Internally Displaced People as the situation seems to be getting from bad to worse.
