May 29 is Sacrosanct-President Jonathan
In response to the disquiet and loud mumurs ensuing in the postponement of the February 14 Presidential elections,the President has come out to reassure Nigerians that the elections will definitely hold within the constitutionally allowed time frame.Speaking through one of his media aide Reuben Abati he declared that May 29 is sacrosanct enjoining Nigerians to support INEC decision.
Reuben Abati in his short communique stated
“President Jonathan believes that this is not a time to trade blames or make statements that may overheat the polity, but a time to show understanding and support the electoral commission to conduct the elections successfully. “It is the President’s understanding that INEC’s decision ought not to generate acrimony since it acted within its powers under the law and in consultation with all relevant stakeholders. “He calls on the international community, civil society and the electorate to continue to support the administration’s commitment to a free, fair, credible, and non-violent electoral process.”
The United states and the opposition All Progressive Congress amongst others, have expressed a whole range of emotions ranging from indignance to disappointment which has created a situation of palpable disquiet since yesterday especially before the official press conference by the INEC chairman Professor Jega.
