Allegations Bordering on 200million Naira embezzlement Tears Assembles of God Leadership Apart
With the recent occurrence one finds in Churches these days,it is rather pertinent for every Christian to have a sharpened sense of discernment in order not to end up at the wrong place. While it is not our place to judge, what is going on presently at the Assembles of God church is unbecoming of a religious organisation, and giving Christians even those who are not members of the congregation a bad name.
According to the narration of events that had been going on, the accusations and counter accusations between the Reverend Paul Emeka on one side and the Council of Elders on the other border on the issue of alleged embezzlement of 200million Naira being church funds. However a closer and more introspective look at the issues shows there is something much deeper going on. The council of elders had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC over what they tag a fraud committed by the Reverend regarding church finances, however when officials of the EFCC got there are delved into the finances, they realised that the Reverend was not the only signatory hence could not have solely drawn money out of the church coffers without co-signatories appending their signatures to the cheques. On the other hand the Reverend had accused some of the members of the elder’s council of conniving to remove him through whatever means, due to his insistence that that certain financial anomalies in the church be corrected. According to his counter accusations he gave the instance of the Church printing press which he had insisted must have a separate bank account, but which the council had refused to accede. He further accused them of keeping church funds in their personal bank accounts ostensibly to garner interests which was also a sore point with them hence the culmination of reasons they sought to remove him being the barrier.
He stated that in spite of the frivolous allegations made against him, which included an accusation brought against him by another Reverend Amaowoh that he was parading himself as a Professor which they deign an embarrassment to the church, even though he confirmed he is a Professor of theology, he accepted an offer of reconciliation with them which they refused. According to him after they threatened to throw his properties out of the church building he was staying in, he approached the courts for an injunction which was binding on the council of elders. Now both contending parties are at a conundrum, as they have expressed a pre-condition for the Reverend to withdraw the lawsuit before they can settle with him, while the Reverend has asked the council of elders to lift the suspension on him before he could withdraw the law suit. The Reverend Emeka had singled out an individual Chidi Okoroafor whom he accused of being one of the main fermenters of the crisis. While insisting that the council of elders do not possess the powers to remove him as the General Superintendent, he has expressed the wish to settle amicably with them as he could not effectively run a church which is divided and in acrimony with him.
